The Mountain Bike Trail, commonly referred to as the Biking/Hiking Trail at Santee State Park, is 7.5 miles (round trip) of fairly even terrain that skirts Lake Marion. The trail travels through dense, mixed hardwood and pine forest, but even during summer, glimpses of the big lake can be enjoyed. This trail is basically an out-and-back but there are loops within the passage. You can also travel on a path that leads to the campground at the park. All in all, there is quite a bit of real estate to pedal your bike on.
Hikers can enjoy this trail too. It's an easy walk, and quite pleasant except for the very hottest times of the year. Carrying water and insect repellant during late spring and summer is recommended.
Trail length: 8 miles

This trail is a premium South Carolina Low Country hiking trail. It is also one of my favorite Low Country hikes. I like to spend a whole day on the 7.5 mile loop, and I'll often go off-trail and sit on a driftwood beach for long periods of time. This is a great thing to do in the warmer months because Lake Marion always seems to push a nice breeze shoreward. That will keep you cool and keep the mosquitoes away too.
Mountain biking is more popular than hiking on this trail, but I like to hike it (slowly) because there is a good concentration of whitetail deer in the area, and I have seen them on every visit.
