I've been to Lake Ashwood several times recently. Did some fishing. Walked around here and there. Pretty cool place. There a lot of rules there so it is a good idea for first time visitors to read the big DNR signs.
The area is very well maintained by the SCDNR and SCDOT. There is some garbage about (mostly on the shoreline), but the place is pretty clean considering there are no garbage cans. For the most part, it looks like most people carry out their litter.
Birding is good at Ashwood. If you like to watch Egrets, this is the place to go.
Really, the only shortcoming of the place is that there is no restroom facility. A simple potra-potty would be nice for the folks who want to spend an entire day there. You know, in case of gastro-intestinal emergencies...
