Once you cross the Davidson River you climb steeply to Shut-In Ridge. Then the trail takes you up & down knobs, along ridges & down into several gaps. Points of interest include ridge top views of Cedar Rock Mountain & Butter Gap Shelter, where there is a spring near by, as well as Pilot Mountain, Shining Rock, and Black Balsam Knob.
About 4 miles up from Daniel Boone Boyscout Camp, there is also a 1 mile trail that leads to the top of Cold Mountain. The trail ends at the Daniel Boone Boyscout Camp on the Little East Fork Pigeon River.
Trail length: 30 miles

I would recommend this trail as a Fall trail. I backpacked it this summer and the majority of the trail was overgrown and we spent a lot of time bushwhacking. Since there was so much vegetation we saw almost no views even though we were hiking along ridges. Black Balsam Knob was definitely the highlight because we were actually able to get 360 degree views there.
This is a very strenuous trail, so make sure you're prepared!
