Description

Paces Mill offers running and walking trails along the banks of the Hooch (Chattahoochee River). A rushing waterfall, a trek up Rottenwood Creek to see the ruins of historic Akers Mill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akers_Mill ), 3.6 miles of paved trail, and even more unpaved trails are a treat for all.

The paved portion is enjoyed by runners and those who enjoy gentle terrain. Getting off the paved portion allows for great views of the Hooch including Long Island Shoals, Devil Race Course Shoals and a dense urban forest climbing up to a 1000 foot elevation from the 800 foot elevation of the Hooch.

There is a daily parking fee or the opportunity to purchase an annual pass at an automated machine at the Paces Mill parking area. The annual pass is a great deal as it covers parking at the 16 parking areas along the 48 mile Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

Great parking greets you when you first arrive. The paved portion isn't flat, but the rises and dips are gentle. The paved section, Bob Callahan Trail was well maintained and very clean for the entire one-way 1.8 mile trek.

A great trail for runners, saunterers, strollers, or bikers.

For the hikers there are a number of trails to follow up the "Hooch" where the paved trail turns North and away from the river.

Secret Hint: You can barely see the old Akers Mill in the fall/winter from the trail, but it is there. At the trail marker labeled mile 1.14, go to the rail and look east along Rottenwood Creek and a little ways north up the creek. The mill is on this side of the creek a little north of your position.
