This trail is part of the Florida Trailwalker Program. Goethe State Forest has more than 15 different natural communities and may contain the largest tract of contiguous, old-growth longleaf pine flatwoods in the state. It also features scrubby flatwoods, dome swamp, sandhill, and basin swamp. Buck Island Prong Trail is 1.8 miles.

    We hiked this trail on June 20, 2016. We really liked this trail despite some drawbacks. The kiosk was empty and needed information. The trail needed some maintenance as there were two trees down over the trail and many branches and palm fronds. As for animal life, we saw many garden spiders, birds, butterflies and dragonflies, and sighted one deer and one snake. The trail was poorly marked after "point B" and again near the end of the trail. Occasionally it was hard to find the trail markers. Be sure to wear bug spray as the mosquitoes were thick in the cypress knee area. I found three ticks on me later so be sure and check for them, too. The scenery was very nice from slash pine to long needle pine, cypress trees to palmettos. Very tropical look in some areas.From what we read we thought the markers were orange but they were green. We also couldn't find the C, D, F and G markers. Overall, it was a beautiful, varied trail. It was very hot but we had a slight breeze. I believe it was a longer trail than what we had read beforehand.
