Description

Blue Sky is a beautiful trail which connects the Horsetooth Mountain Park, Coyote Ridge, and Devil's Backbone trail systems. Hike through a desert environment with some meadows and prairies interspersed. This is a great place to go for a quiet, secluded hike. Watch out for rattlesnakes, though!

This is a multi-use trail so please practice trail etiquette.

I hike the area regularly. It gets Mountain Bikers around 10:00AM. Trail is easy to difficult if you hike the entire trail. You have a few options. Hike in a few miles to where the trail splits and turnaround. Have someone drop you off at the trail, and hike it all the way to Devils Backbone trail head in Loveland, CO. About 12 miles. Last, make a day of it. I started out at Devils Backbone trail-head off highway 34 in Loveland, hiked to Blue Sky trail head in Fort Collins, and back. I kept a pretty good hiking pace and did the 20 plus miles in about 6 1/2 hours. I would allow up to 8 hours if you plan on taking more breaks. You are out in the open range, so refill your camelbak up when you get to the next trail head. It gets pretty hot! I almost always hear or see a snake, along with small lizards, rabbits and deer.
