7000 acre tract of longleaf pine with a small area designated for camping. Sites 1-27 are designed for equestrian campers with water and electric at each site. Standard non-electric sites 1-4, on Wood Duck Pond, have fire rings and picnic tables only. A pit toilet is available up on the hill. You will have to bring your own water unless you boil water from the pond.
H. Cooper Black is geared toward equestrians with 20 miles of trails, but also hosts many canine field trials throughout the year. Of course, tent campers, mountain bikers, and hikers are welcome.
H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field Trial and Recreation Area may not be a typical South Carolina State Park but it is well managed for wildlife enhancement and can give a visitor many opportunities to observe the various species that call the place home.

When I visited H. Cooper Black last week, just to take pictures, I instantly knew I would be back to camp on Wood Duck Pond. This past week I did just that and it was outstanding.
During the day, I was entertained by folks bringing in their dogs for retriever training, and after they all had left, I was alone in the very peaceful setting. As dusk approached, whippoorwills started singing and fireflies started dancing in the cool May night air. A bit later, a full moon rose over the longleaf pines and illuminated the area so well I didn't need my lantern. Sitting quietly with no artificial light, whitetail deer came curiously close to me.
H. Cooper Black is a well utilized equestrian and bird dog recreation area, but the seemingly overlooked Wood Duck Pond camping area is a very nice place to just come and camp, and all those 20 miles of trails and roads would be pretty great for mountain bikers too.
