Campground Description

The family campground is located between the park office and Somerset Place. Thirteen campsites, each with a picnic table and grill, are well-suited for tents and trailers.

The edge of a cypress/sweetgum forest furnishes a shaded area for some of the campsites while others are located in an open, grassy meadow. Water and restrooms with showers are nearby.

First come first served/reservation for some sites. Comfortable, quiet, well-maintained. Reasonable space between sites. Some shaded, some not. Firewood available for purchase on honor system. Bathrooms/showers are clean, and there is a separate picnic area with grills and tables a short walk away from the lake. There is at least one hike-in campground nearby as well that is in a heavily wooded area (we saw 2 baby bears in that area, and some deer on a hike). Old plantation a short hike away as a point of interest, and a historic cemetery site. Lush woods with lots of birds, dragonflies, and intriguing foliage of all types and vines climbing tall trees. The lake itself is a peaceful spot to sit and relax, especially at daybreak. I would go again. I teetered btwn 3 and 4 on rating simply because I know there are much grander spots, but I don't want to rate it low because for an easy to access drive-in site it's nice. If you're looking for WAY off the beaten path separation from everything, then this is not exactly the spot. Taking a hike on one of the trails can however give you that sense in short order. Then you can come back to the comfort of a hot shower. That's a plus in my book.
