Sugarloaf 1 is a quiet, remote getaway in the northwoods of New Hampshire. Located near the western base of Mount Washington and 3 miles east of the small town of Twin Mountain, the campground is minutes away from hiking, mountain biking, scenic driving, fishing and sightseeing opportunities. The White Mountains boast pristine forests, clear mountain streams and rivers and the tallest peaks in the Northeast. The forest encompasses nearly 800,000 acres in New Hampshire and western Maine, and is one of the most popular in the country.

This has been a favorite campground of ours for many years. The sites are large and there is a good buffer of trees between sites. There are 2 rest rooms with flush toilets. Fire rings are in good shape and large enough to get a good fire going for cooking or sitting around. The Zealand river is close by and offers a great place for kids to play. The hike to Zealand AMC hut is also nearby. My girls loved going on the hike and buying candy bars at the hut. There is no open space, but a short hike to Sugarloaf 2 campground up the road gives access to a good size field for ball games or just running around. Close to Mt. Washington and Bretton Woods. Lots of other hikes close by, both easy and challenging. This campground is in the national forest. It is not a commercial campground so don't expect commercial campground amenities. If you are looking for a quiet, off the beaten path place to pitch a tent (or RV) that is near some great hiking, this is a great place to camp.
