Lake Sainte Kathryn is a nicely wooded, rustic campground on a 150 acre lake. There are 26 sites. Six of them are on the water.
The lake reaches depths of 20 feet. The campers we talked to were there for the panfish. The lake is also said to contain bass, pike, and walley. Trout can be found in nearby rivers.
The campground contains one 2.5 mile hiking trail. There are many other hiking opportunities nearby, and Lake Sainte Kathryn is a beautiful base camp.
Across m-28 (Sidnaw's main road) is The Sturgeon River Gorge wilderness. It contains a rustic campground on the river, hiking, an overlook, and a beautiful waterfall. It takes a bit of a hike to find the waterfall, and one is likely to have it all to themselves.
Two popular waterfalls are a short drive away. They are Bond Falls, and Agate falls. Bond falls is probably one of the most popular falls in the state, aside from Tahquamenon.
The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is a little over two hours from the campground, and well worth the drive. It may sound like a long way, but the drive itself is an enjoyable one. Take a day to see the Lake of the Clouds and hike the East/West trail.
Empty sites should be available any time. There are quite a few other campgrounds in the vicinity, should the campground actually be full. As of August 2009 sites were $15/night.
