Campground Description

Brewery Creek Guard Station is situated at an elevation of 9,500 feet in a densely wooded aspen grove overlooking Brewery Creek. The cabin is a few miles south of the Continental Divide on the northern end of the San Luis Valley in the Rio Grande National Forest. Built in 1935, the two room cabin was originally used by a forest ranger who oversaw the Poncha and Bonanza Districts of what was then called the Cochetopa National Forest. Today the cabin is a comfortable getaway for guests seeking relaxation and recreation in south central Colorado.

Storybook scenery. Everything in the cabin is well kept up and functioning. Their was a cattle drive - we watched about 6 cowboys move hundreds of head up to the mountain saddle right outside the cabin just across the beaver ponds on a magical misty morning. The forest service came through to find out what improvements are needed at the site. There was plenty of cut aspen firewood to burn in the fire pit at night. It is very secluded, but, the road is in excellent condition to get there. There are no outdoor lights at night even across the creek from the other road or neighbors cabins to interfere with stargazing. Very quiet and private yet we did not feel stranded we were very comfortable there! We enjoyed playing the board games there are so many! Also, note the hand pump is way too much exercise to get water! Bring a large container to fill up once you get the pump primed or you will regret it. There are outdoor metal chairs and a picnic table on site, too.
