Virginia (VA) hiking features trails over diverse terrains from the shores of the Chesapeake Bay to the Cumberland Mountains.

Western Virginia is dominated by mountain hiking with the Appalachian Mountains taking up the majority of the area. George Washington and Jefferson National Forests host numerous forested trails through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Take the Blue Ridge Parkway into the area and hike easy trails that meander through old growth forests, or climb steep trails to summit Mount Rogers, the highest point in Virginia. The famous Appalachian Trail runs through here allowing hikers to enjoy a strenuous day hike or multi-day hike. The Cumberland Mountains in Southwest Virginia also offer plenty of wooded hiking trails to explore.

Head east through Central Virginia and discover trails in the Piedmont region, where paths meander through the scenic foothills. Eastern Virginia is all about coastal hiking with sandy beach trails stretching out along the Atlantic coastline. The Chesapeake Bay also offers shoreline hiking where trails wind along the Bay providing stunning views. These flat trails are perfect for families with small children. Head north up the Potomac River and enjoy hiking trails in the DC area, and don't forget to check out more hiking opportunities near cities like Roanoke, Richmond, and Norfolk.
