From the shores of North Illinois (IL) to the Prairies of Central and South Illinois, the Prairie State has plenty of attractions for adventurous hikers.
The Chicago area, lovingly referred to as Chicagoland, provides a multitude of hiking and outdoor experiences in more urban areas. Urban hiking seems a little less urban with miles of lakefront nearby providing harbors, trails, beaches, parks, and reserves. Lake Michigan hiking offers both sandy, shoreline trails and wooded trails that meander along the lake.
Find trails in Northern Illinois where paths explore hillier terrain and bring hikers out onto rugged bluffs. Hike along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers for flatter, more family-friendly trails, or check out Central Illinois for hikes that highlight rolling hills, secluded valleys, deep forests, and farmland. Hiking trails can be found leading past pristine lakes, rivers, wetlands, and marshes as well. Southern Illinois offers Shawnee National Forest where hikers can find secluded trails at the foot of the Ozarks.
