Overall a great little trail. It was quite steep for about the first 1/2 mile or so. Also the surface is pretty loose, so footing is difficult. However the canyon and lake are beautiful. The trail follows the canyon as it goes from pines to open brush and the lake is just a small mountain lake surrounded by tall peaks and pine trees. When we went it was in early July and there was still quite a bit of snow and there was some ice on the lake, so I suspect it never really gets warm. There were several places for backcountry camping around the lake, so a small overnighter could be a great time. During our trip there were several accidents, including coming across a group that had a horse roll which resulted in a significant injury. Also, the lake itself in very deep with steep sides. Our boy wanted to test how cold the water was and stepped out, only to go under as the bottom was at least 8 ft deep within the first couple feet from shore.
