The National Forest provides over 900 miles of trails for campers to explore, and plenty of primitive wilderness camping opportunities as well. Find a campground near Stowe, just north of Montpelier, and enjoy a campfire at the base of Mt. Mansfield, the highest point in Vermont. Secluded alpine camping is also available for those wanting to backpack the mountain. Smuggler's Notch is also just north of Montpelier--here campers can enjoy family-friendly campgrounds with RV and camper sites as well as basic tent sites.
All throughout Vermont, scenic campsites can be found in deep forests, beautiful meadows, and pristine marshes. Lake camping is popular along the shores of Lake Champlain in Western Vermont, where campers can enjoy a wooded site on the lake. The Connecticut River, in Eastern Vermont, provides secluded riverside camping with scenic views of the beautiful river as well.
