Description

This is one of my new favorites! What a great family hike! Hawk's Nest Rail Trail begins at the trailhead parking lot. The trail is approximately 1.8 miles one way, total of approximately 4 if you walk back to your vehicle.



This is a light gravel trail and is suitable to for all age groups and hiking levels. We observed families with strollers on this trail. It is also suitable for biking. Very easy, comfortable walking.



You will pass over a couple of old rail road bridges, pass several beautiful waterfalls and even an entrance to an old coal mine. There was also an area called "The Pond" which was a natural opening in the mountain with cold air and water flowing out. We're not quite sure it was called "The Pond" except it appears they had attempted to collect water at the entrance of the opening. Unfortunately someone had dumped an old bath tub in this area as well. The rest of the trail was very clean and beautifully maintained though.



This hike offers plenty of picnic opportunities. I wish someone would have told us to pack a lunch because you can literally picnic right beside a waterfall. Beautiful!



Although you could hustle through this hike in no time, take your time and enjoy the scenery!



The trail ends at the lake at Hawks' Nest State Park. You could ride the tram to the park, enjoy a meal in the restaurant and hike back to your vehicle.



So many options with this trail! A real gem for families!

Directions

This trail is maintained by the town of Anstead but maps and specific directions can be obtained from Hawk's Nest State Park lodge. You will need to leave the park in order to begin this trail. There is a parking lot on a gravel road at the trailhead.
