Description

Cliffside Trail begins a short distance from the main lodge at Hawks Nest State Park near a picnic shelter (maps can be obtained from the lodge). Although this hike was only 2 miles, it felt much longer. Plan for a few hours. I enjoyed this hike with my two young childres (ages 5 and 8) who are experienced hikers. My parents (in their 60's) also joined us. They are not experienced hikers. LOL! This was a medium level challenge for me and by boys but a much higher level challenge for my parents and will be for anyone who is not an experienced hiker. Wear good shoes and take lots of water.

The hike follows alongside the New River canyon side. You will see many beautiful rock formations (some of the prettiest I've seen on the east coast). The trail will offer great, up close and personal views of the geology of the canyon and you will find yourself daydreaming about the water that must have rushed through the canyon hundrededs of years ago leaving the beautiful designs and forms of these amazing rocks.

We also observed many animal tracks (possible deer, racoon, skunk) but did not observe any wildlife.

Near the end of the trail, you are offered a view of a small waterfall. Much to our disappointment, there was an old, dumped appliance sitting in the middle of the stream below the falls rusting. Some people just don't value the beauty of their surroundings.

The trail ends at an overlook by the highway where you will have a chance to visit a small giftshop, restrooms and scenic overlook. To complete the loop, you will need to either backtrack on the trail or go back to the lodge via the road (which is a short walk). There is not a lot of space for walkers along this road and traffic sometimes goes a little too fast but it worked out ok.

I believe the difficulty of this hike was underrated by the lodge's trail guide. We had a great time but it was just a little more than what we expected with bringing my parents along. Therefore, ensure everyone in your group is an experienced hiker. This is not for beginner's. A nice little challenge.
