This canyon is a favorite of mine! The trail has the appeal of awesome visual stimulation. From the historic cabins that dot the canyon to the green trees and the sparkling river the trail follows.
It is the perfect trail during the summer heat. The tree covered trail keeps you cool throughout the year and you can splash in the creek if you overheat from hiking.
My suggestion is to take the "First Water" trail near the top of the hill for the most senic route. It will lead you in a loop back to the main trail. It is only a short hike to Sturtavant falls, which is the destination of most people hiking here.
Factor in time and energy for the return trip due to the last 1/4 mile being a very slow and difficult uphill hike.
Most of the trail is flat road with a few easy creek crossings. Definetely a family friendly hike.
Reasons for making it a 4 instead of a 5? This trail is very popular and can get crowded especially when the weather is nice. Don't forget to stop by the pack station for an adventure pass (parking pass) so you don't get a ticket.

This trail isn't #11 on the top 100 trails in California for no reason!

It is a beautiful trail with plenty of shade, not too difficult with some fun water-crossing obstacles and plenty of trails to choose from.

This trail isn't very difficult, perfect for beginners.

I warn you though, once you have a nice hiking experience here you may not want to go anywhere else local!
