Description

An idea conceived in 1994, The Palmetto Trail is an ambitious South Carolina project connecting the Atlantic coast with the Blue Ridge mountains. When completed, the trail will cover over 425 continuous miles and run through 14 counties.

290 miles are completed and currently available for public use.



PALMETTO TRAIL SECTION 21 - OCONEE PASSAGE:



3.2 mile path (one way). Designated Blue Ridge mountains terminus of the Palmetto Trail but is currently separated by an unfinished section. Section may be completed as an out-and-back from Oconee State Park or Oconee Station State Historic Site. Ridge views, hardwood forests, and waterfalls. Hiking and mountain biking only. Moderate to difficult trail. Wet conditions may increase difficulty. Mountain biking may be challenging in spots.

To Oconee Station State Historic Site: From the intersection of SC 28 and SC 11 at Walhalla, drive north on SC 11 for 6.3 miles and turn left (northwest) onto Oconee Station Road (Oconee County S-37-95). Drive 2.4 miles (approximately 0.3 mile past Oconee Station State Historic Site) to the trailhead on the left (parking is limited to four cars). Additional parking is available at Oconee Station State Historic Site picnic area.



To Oconee State Park: From Walhalla, drive northwest on SC 28 for approximately 8.4 miles and bear right onto SC 107. Continue another 2.5 miles on SC 107 to Oconee State Park. After the Fee Station, turn left and drive to the parking area at the campground.
