Description

An idea conceived in 1994, The Palmetto Trail is an ambitious South Carolina project connecting the Atlantic coast with the Blue Ridge mountains. When completed, the trail will cover over 425 continuous miles and run through 14 counties.

290 miles are completed and currently available for public use.



PALMETTO TRAIL SECTION 19 - POINSETT RESERVOIR PASSAGE:



6.6 mile path connecting the Blue Wall passage and an unfinished section. 10 mile hike if starting from The Blue Wall Preserve. Hiking only. Strict rules apply to this area. Go to~~http://www.palmettoconservation.org/assets/Poinsett rules.pdf~~before you decide to visit. There is very little you can do here except to walk from one end of the section to the other, and all hikers must be off the trail before dark. The strict rules are enforce to protect the hiker, and the Greenville Watershed. Moderate to difficult trail during good conditions.

To the eastern trailhead

From Landrum, drive northwest on US 176 and turn left onto West Lakeshore Drive. Drive past the lake to the Blue Ridge Preserve, which will be on your right. From the preserve you will need to hike approximately 3.4 miles to Vaughn’s Gap, which is the trail head for the Poinsett Passage.



To the western trailhead at Orchard Lake Campground

From Spartanburg, drive north on I­26 and exit at the Tryon/Columbus exit. Drive west on US 176 through Tryon. Approximately 5.0 miles from Tryon turn left onto Pearson’s Falls Road. Turn left onto Fork Creek Road immediately after passing under the railroad trestle. The campground is approximately 5.0 miles.



From Greenville, drive north on US 25 and after you cross SC 11, turn right onto Old Highway 25 (Greenville County Road S­23­969). Drive for approximately 7.0 miles and turn right onto Saluda Road, which changes to Mountain Page after you cross into North Carolina. Drive approximately 3.5 miles and make a sharp turn right onto Mine Mountain Road. The campground is approximately 2.0 miles.
