Description

If you want to be on not one, but two lakes, and get away from motors and developed shorelines, AND you like to swim and fish for trout and bass, give this campground a try! Nestled in an area between two deep, clear lakes, Luna-White Deer provides a deep-woods setting where you can hear the eerie call of loons at night and see lots of wildlife by day. For scenic vistas and a chance to explore nature more closely, hike the four-mile trail around both lakes.

Great campground that is off the beaten path. We went in June of last year and this place was quiet!!! Very nice beach that is pretty close to campsites. Campsites are very private with pretty dense brush separating campsites. A great place overall.

LWD is one of the Nicolet's real gems. While it is true that both lakes are at historic lows owing to a several year drought, the campground hasn't changed in its 40 year history. One of its unique features is that there is no development on either lake as both are completely within the national forest. LWD rates as my favorite northern Wisconsin camping locations. Perfect for a tent or small trailer. Expect a "back to nature" experience with typical national forest facilities.

I've been camping here for about fifteen years, every summer and fall. This was the first real 'way back in the woods campground' I've camped at, and I find myself comparing all other campgrounds to this one.
There's a great beach on one lake, and a boat launch on the other (though you can swim in both), with dozens of sites either right on the lake with great views, or short, well traveled trails that lead down to the water. The water has gone down alot over the years, but Luna-White Deer is still one of the most beautiful places I've been.
Most of the sites have good privacy, the trees and brush between the sites are fairly dense. My only complaint is that in recent years there has been a huge influx of RVs and campers. I camp to get away from all the noise of the city, but all throughout the day you hear generators charging up the RVS and campers. In addition, it's harder to get good sites during most parts of summer now, even midweek. This place is popular for a reason... If you prefer tent camping, don't let the RVs discourage you. Two great, non-motorized lakes, fishing, swimming, four miles of hiking with connections to trails that connect to many other campgrounds in the area, not too far from town. I'm picky at the places I camp now, just because I grew up camping in a place as beautiful as this one.
