Description

Camp Rucker was designed mostly for use by groups. However, if the area has not been reserved by a group, individuals are permitted to camp. (Reservations are posted on the sign near the campground parking area.)Camp Rucker is located in a grassy area with plenty of open space between the oaks, junipers and Arizona walnuts that provide welcome shade on a summer day. A short distance from the camp, Rucker Creek usually runs year-round. Above the trees that surround the campground, Monte Vista Peak and a number of minor peaks and foothills provide a scenic backdrop.Camp Rucker is located on the Rucker/Tex Canyon scenic drive. Other recreation opportunities in the area include the historic Rucker Military Camp and Ranch, which is left over from the days when the U.S. Cavalry and the Chiricahua Apaches were at war throughout this region. Many of the buildings within that outpost are still standing, and interpretive signs spread among them give Forest visitors a glimpse into their history. Farther up Forest Road 74E, a number of trails branch off from the road into the Chiricahua Wilderness.
