Description

Good fishing and excellent views of the San Francisco Peaks characterize these two lakeside campgrounds. Ashurst Lake is stocked with trout, bass and channel catfish and boasts enough wind to attract a fairly large following of windsurfers. Both campgrounds hug the lakeshore with campsites huddled in a picturesque stand of gnarly old juniper trees and pinyon pines. One of Ashurst Lake's most notable characteristics is it ability to hold a high water level in drought years. That can be very important here in northern Arizona where less resilient lakes sometimes dry up.In addition to fishing and board sailing the lake offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching during the spring waterfowl migration. For a special treat look for white-faced ibises grazing in the shallows along with the cinnamon teal, pintails and other ducks. Bald eagles and osprey can also be seen in the area, along with a number of species of hawks and songbirds.

Fees

$10.00 per night, up to eight people with one vehicle. Second vehicle per night: $5.00 additional. These campgrounds are available for Picnic/day use (10 a.m to 4 p.m.) for a fee of $5.00 up to 5 people.

A group of us, (5-10 people) go camping once a month to a National Forest Service Campground. These campgrounds are VERY VERY rocky and aren't great for tent camping. The host was great and the sites are spaced out pretty well. It was nice being right off the lake, which has very rocky banks. We rented a canoe from the Lake Mary Convenience store and had a blast.
