Description

This 12-acre, artificial lake is nestled in the southeastern portion of the Long Cane Ranger District of the Sumter National Forest. Lick Fork Lake offers a variety of recreational opportunities including camping, swimming, picnicking, fishing, boating, mountain biking, and hiking. Attractions A heavily wooded campground offers 10 sites in the relaxing solitude of nature, with easy access for other recreational activities. A camp host is on site during peak season. For your comfort and safety, there is a designated swimming and picnic area with a bath house. The day-area was designed to accommodate the fishing enthusiast with a pedestrian bridge and boat ramp for non-motorized boats. The lake is managed to enhance catfish, bream, and bass populations. The trailhead for the Horn Creek Trail is at this site. Although primarily used by mountain bikes, hikers are welcome. This is a 5.7-mile loop trail and winds through the rolling piedmont hills of oak, hickory, and pine forest. The Lick Fork Lake Hiking Trail originates at the swimming area and travels around the lake, ending at the boat ramp.Hikers on this 2-mile loop will enjoy seeing distinctive piedmont vegetation.

From Edgefield, take SC 23 south 8.2 miles. Bear left onto SC 230. Drive 0.5 miles to route S 19-263, drive 1.9 miles to entrance on right.From I-20, take exit 1 at North Augusta, go north of SC 230 through Colliers. Approximately 3 miles past Colliers, turn right onto Edgefield County S-263. Drive 2 miles to entrance to Lick Fork Recreation Area on the right.

Lick Fork Lake Campground. Mid-week summer solitude.

Mr. Johnny Molloy’s description of Lick Fork Lake campground in the “Best in Tent Camping Book” is complete and accurate. No need to say what has already been said.
I will, however, point out that at a certain time of the year, Lick Fork affords a camper something that is rare in developed campgrounds. And that is solitude.

Summer is the time to find it, and mid-week is a more specific place to look for it.
Any site, except the camp hoist site (#10), is usually available Tuesday through Thursday during the hotter summer months and it is not uncommon to have the whole campground to yourself during those mid-week nights. There is no guarantee of that, but I have made two visits this summer during mid-week and had the whole Lick Fork Valley to myself after dark 5 out of the 6 total nights I spent there. That was pretty special.


Day-use areas.

Picnic areas and the beach get light to moderate use during mid-week in the summer. Mid-week users are usually local families and they are usually not loud groups. Most of the sounds coming from the beach area on my last two visits were sounds of happy children. Very cool!

Invariably, day users leave at dusk. 1 by 1 they leave until you are sealed off in the valley. Alone in the wild.


Recommendation.

Take a look at my Lick Fork Lake pictures and read the descriptions. If the area looks nice to you, and you can imagine having some quality quiet time there…think about coming! Bring the family!! This is a special place that is very well cared for by the Forest Service and the Camp Host. Just come during mid-week, OK? Weekends do tend to be a little…’active’.
