Description

Before the Chattooga was declared a Wild and Scenic River, campers could drive all the way to Burrells Ford Campground. But since becoming a Wild and Scenic River, a protective corridor has been established, effectively cutting off all direct auto access to the campground. This has had mixed results: It has limited the use of the campground, but has cut maintenance as well. Of course, the short walk may deter some tent campers, but you can be guaranteed no RVs will ever be at Burrells Ford! Follow the old jeep road down to the river, entering the protected corridor. The road forks at the river bottom. The bottom is forested in tall white pines, with a thick understory of holly trees, rhododendron, and mountain laurel. The Chattooga runs shallow and clear directly in front of the campground, no doubt the ford of days gone by. On the other side of the river lies the state of Georgia, deeply shaded in thick, jungle-like vegetation.

From the city of Walhalla, drive north on SC 28 8.5 miles to SC 107; then turn right. Follow SC 107 for 8.9 miles. Then turn left on Forest Service Road 708. Descend on FS-708 3 miles. Burrells Ford parking will be on your left. Hike in .3 miles on jeep trail behind gate. Camping sites will be on your right.

Backpack in to the primitive sites along the river and you will enjoy a truely wonderful area. Remember to hang anything that would attract a black bear 10 feet up between two trees.

Primitive campsite directly on the Chattogga are nice, but check out the sites that are along King Creek. You might take a liking to them, as I did...
