Description

Cherry Hill Campground is the focal point for the Cherry Hill Recreation Area. And, as one of the best national forest campgrounds in the Southern Appalachians, it is a fine place to be. The campground, located in the shallow upper valley of West Fork Creek, lies covered with an abundant understory beneath a towering forest of hardwood and pine. The Forest Service must work hard to keep the vegetation from reclaiming this land.

Cherry Hill campground is at 2250 feet of elevation, yet the ground vegetation is so lush you’d think you were in the tropics, and not in a temperate forest.
There is a nice mix of flora here but northern plant life, like you would expect to see in the Appalachian Mountains, prevail over species you would expect to see in the rest of South Carolina.

Wildlife here is typical of Appalachia. Black Bear. Coyotes. Red Headed Woodpeckers. Large Whitetail Deer.

The campground is special because of it’s beauty, cleanliness, organization, and LOCATION.
The Wild and Scenic Chattooga River, at the Burrells Ford access, is only a 4.1 mile drive away, plus a .3 mile walk in. Trout fishing is great up and down stream from the Ford.
Hiking opportunities are many around the Burrells Ford area. If you like day hiking to find water falls, this is a super place to do it. King Creek Falls and Spoonauger Falls are two examples.

The campground is fairly quiet during mid-week. During my two visits, I only saw people in a couple camp sites.
I like site #3. The way it’s tucked into the lush ground vegetation reminded me of a cove. A haven where you can put your back to a mountain ridge and watch life unfold in the pastures below.
Of course, there is not a pasture in front of you as you sit at the picnic table in site #3, but, if you come to visit Cherry Hill, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

There are some quite nice walk-in sites at the campground too. If you don’t mind carrying your gear a few yards (literally, only a few yards), you should check them out.

Cherry Hill is a seasonal campground, and closes at the end of September. Opens back up again in May.
Fee is $10 per night.

My suggestion for Cherry Hill is mid-week, any time the campground is open. Use the campground as a base-camp to explore the area. Bring your hiking boots. Bring your mountain bikes. Bring your trout fishing gear. Bring your camera. Whatever…just load the car with your stuff, and the family. Cherry Hill and the Chattooga River area will take care of the rest!
