Description

Yankee Springs Recreation Area was once the hunting grounds of the Algonquin Indians and the famous Chieftain, Chief Noonday. The site was established in 1835 and the village was made famous by Yankee Bill Lewis who owned and operated a hotel along the stagecoach run from Kalamazoo to Grand Rapids.The rugged terrain, the bogs and marshes, the lakes and streams, and the unique beauty of the parks 5,200 acres lend itself to many forms of recreation. A modern campground is located on the shores of beautiful Gun Lake while rustic camping is available at Deep Lake. An equestrian campground and a youth organization campground are provided. Nine lakes are located within the park boundaries providing excellent fishing and water sports of all kinds. As a year-round park, cross-county skiing on its more than 10 acres of Nordic ski trails, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice fishing are all popular winter activities. Yankee Springs is one of my absolute favorite state parks in Michigan. Simply put, the park offers a great sandy beach with some simple swings and slides that the kids will enjoy. Wade out a long ways into the lake - very good for young kids! The roads are paved making it great to bike or just stroll around. There is a boat ramp right in the campground and your campsite. The bathrooms and showers are clean and amply accomodate the number of campsites. The place is wooded - a great canopy of trees to really get into nature. Sites are spacious - your note stacked in like sardines. And the campground is only one very small piece of the park. there is another whole section for those day trippers, tons of trails and 4x4 paths to take the jeep back into some wooded areas (go see the Devil's Soup Bowl and the Lake overlook bluff), and it is near enough to Grand Rapids or Lansing for a day trip if you'd like to take in a museum or other entertainment.

One big piece of advise though... Try to make a reservation and do so very early. This campground, being a favorite for a lot of folks, does fill up quickly! It's that good!

If you want a quiet, private camping experience, don't camp here. It's what you would expect of a campground close to downstate cities....busy, lots of lake traffic, and no privacy at all.

Excellent bathroom/shower facilities. Boating access ramp to Gun Lake right in the campsite. There are several campsites right at the water's edge. Dump station available at exit. Lots of trails for hiking/biking at the state park this site is in. I had a good time at this campground, but book early because it is very popular.
