Description

The Corps newest lake project on the Savannah River, lying between J. Strom Thurmond Lake to the south and Hartwell Lake to the north, Russell is one of the finest fishing lakes in the Southeast. Hunting opportunities abound as well. The cost of construction of recreational facilities was shared with the states of Georgia and South Carolina, and operation and maintenance of these facilities has been assumed by these states. Russell Lake has two unique and informative visitor centers at the powerhouse and the Project Office.

This area is rich in hydro-history and a marvel of modern hydro-engineering. The greatest thing? All the history and engineering has given us something back. We can recreate along the Savannah River corridor for free or really cheap, and I would say it’s some of the best recreation available east of the Mississippi.
My favorite campgrounds along the corridor are Leroy’s ferry, on the South Carolina side, and Bussey Point on the Georgia side.
NOTE: Both Leroy's Ferry campground and Bussey Point campround are on Lake Thurmond, further downriver from Lake Russell. Lake Russell can be easily accessed by car from both campgrounds.

Excellent area of the Sav. river corridor. Many camping opportunities on both sides of the big river, thanks to the Aymy Corps!
