Description

SAND, SUN, WATER & FUNSound like a day at the beach? Well, actually, the sands at the Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area were a beach surrounding a lake approximately two million years ago. What remains today offers one of the most unique recreation spots in Arizona. Where else does the opportunity to ride in sand dunes and soak in relaxing hot tubs exist at the same location? However, please be considerate of your neighbors who may not be here to participate in the same activity as you. This is the only way this area will continue to be available to have fun in the sand, sun, and water.

Directions

From Safford, AZ take I191 south to Tanque Rd. east to Haekel Rd. south. Follow the signs to the Recreation Area.

We really enjoy Hot Well Dunes. Te best time to go is not durning a holiday, a it can get busy and loud. If you can slip away during the week for 3 or 4 days (in the winter) you will find very few people and you can have the numerous riding trails all to yourself. There are about 13 marked camping spots, a few with limited shade, but yu can pretty much set up camp anywhere you like. Just note, other than the hot tub there is no water or electricity... bring what you need and please leave the area cleaner than you found it.

This is a strange place because it attracts two completely different groups of campers...1. ATV and motorcycle enthusiasts, and 2. Hot Springs lovers. Talk about a dichotomy! I have never been there when it was peaceful, which is what the hot springs lovers are looking for. The ATV-ers roar their engines all day, and all night! Its a party zone as well, sometimes with drunken people blasting tunes all through the night. There's an area with an apartment complex-like jacuzzi tub with natural and free hot springs. Great spot on cold winter nights...If you can stand the noise!

Local Says: Nice desert camp. Crazy with un-regulated ATVs and the like on weekends. If you're into that, and you don't mind the noise, this is a great place for dirt bikes and the like.
