Reviews of Cusino Lake State Forest Campground

(1 out of 1 members found this review useful.)Cusino Lake was our destination last summer after reading about it in Jim DuFresne's "Michigan's Best Campground" guide. His description said the 6 sites were "along the shoreline in a stand of impressive Hemlock pines". But when we arrived we found that almost all of the pines had been cut down, leaving little shade and even less privacy. And although the lake is beautiful, it is not "totally undeveloped" as DuFresne claimed. There is a huge house right next to the campground with a large dock and a big motorboat.
We chose to backtrack 3 miles or so and stay at Canoe Lake State Forest Campground. Four sites, well-spread out under the trees and all right on the shoreline of the gorgeous, although smaller, Canoe Lake. We had the whole campground to ourselves. It's a great little lake to canoe, and we saw eagles and Loons every day. It's not too far from Munising (22 miles or so), and there is a small store in Melstrand, 11 miles away. If you want solitude and the good chance of having no neighbors, check it out.
