Description
Chippokes Plantation State Park is one of the oldest working farms in the United States. Chippokes is a living historical exhibit located in a rural agricultural area along the James River in Surry County. In addition, the park has a wide variety of traditional park offerings, including a swimming complex, visitor center, picnic facilities, and hiking and biking trails. The plantation has kept its original boundaries since the 1600s and has a variety of cultivated gardens and native woodland. The formal gardens surrounding the Chippokes Mansion are accented by azaleas, crepe myrtle, boxwood and seasonal flowers. The plantation grounds are also home to the Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum. Chippokes Plantation State Park is operated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation in cooperation with the Chippokes Plantation Farm Foundation. The Virginia General Assembly created the foundation in 1977 to establish, administer and maintain the model farm. Funding for the foundation comes from farmland rent payments, donations, admissions and gift shop sales.Activities

(2 out of 2 members found this review useful.) Reply to ReviewB Loop is paved and great for larger rigs. It also has some pull thru's and paired sites. Nice showers and clean bathrooms.
They have a huge pool with 2 diving boards that keeps the kids happy for hours! Although it is on the James, there is no boat ramp, and beach access is not readily available. The working farm and plantation house is educational.
Take the Ferry over to Jamestown/Williamsburg for lots to do!

(0 out of 0 members found this review useful.) Reply to ReviewJust back from spending a few nights here. Peaceful, beautiful, and clean! I have to note I was there the week prior to Memorial Day weekend, so maybe that was why it was soooo quiet! Tent camped in A Loop where the sites are shady and large. One note of caution, if you plan to swim on the James River bring a beach umbrella as there really is no shade. The water is great for little ones. I have two 4 year olds and they could walk out more than 30 yards, still touching the ground! One word of warning, I can't say for sure, but I'm quite confident there are sand chiggers on that beach. I counted more than 45 bites on one foot & ankle the day after hanging out on the beach. Just saying...be careful! Otherwise, I highly recommend this campground!
